Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II based their musical on Edna Ferber’s bestselling novel of the same name. When Show Boat opened on Broadway in 1927, it was a watershed moment in the history of American musicals. Compared to operettas and light musical comedies of the time, Show Boat was a musical play that tackled subjects like poverty, racial oppression, interracial marriage, the act of “passing” as white, and marital abandonment. Show Boat boldly depicted racial issues and was the first racially integrated musical, with black and white performers appearing and singing on stage together.
